Whitebark Pine Technician
Background:
The Ulkatcho First Nation (UFN) Whitebark Pine Replanting Project (a collaboration between the UFN Natural Resource Department and Yun Ka Whu’Ten Forestry Ltd) aims to reestablish Blister rust-resistant Whitebark Pine in suitable areas recently disturbed by wildfire, pine beetle, and logging. Whitebark pine is a federally endangered, blue-listed keystone species. It provides vital food to wildlife and is a traditional food source for the UFN. Whitebark pine is experiencing high mortality rates due to the introduction of a pathogenic fungus called Whitepine Pine Blister Rust (Cronartium ribicola).
Primary Duties:
- The Technician will assist in all aspects of the cone collection phase of this project. This includes. Finding, caging, and collecting Whitebark pine cones at various high elevation sites.
- Cleaning and sorting cones and seeds.
Requirements:
- First Aid Level 1 (Level 3 preferred)
- Ability to work in adverse conditions (ie, Hot, cold, wind, rain, snow, biting insects, bears, etc.)
- Comfortable with heights, as this job will include tree climbing (training will be provided).
- A high fitness level is needed as sites are located at high elevation with no direct road access.
- 18+, ideally with work/ education experience in forestry, biology, or outdoor recreation.
- Valid BC driver's licence (preferred).
- Criminal Background Check.
- 2 personal or employment references.

Work period: 13 days in July + 12 days in September- October (Mandatory Training Session July 2-4)
Start Date: TBD (anticipated at the beginning of July 2025)
Hours per week: 30-40
Pay: 25$/hr
